Today is the birthdate [1845] of Rogier Diederik Marius Verbeek who wrote a chronicle of the eruption of Krakatoa. In 1885 Verbeek published a detailed day-by-day account of the eruption and its aftermath with beautiful illustrations titled Krakatau [the Indonesian spelling for the island] and it remains the principal first-hand source for all later investigators of the eruption.
