"True function of science" poll

What do you think is the true function of science...

Knowledge...2
Technology...0
Both...3
Other...0

Ideally, the true function of science would be the acquisition of knowledge about ourselves and the universe and in many cases that is the primary function but it is also true that science is technology oriented. Think back to the industrial revolution and the importance of "iron" products: From iron beds [that swiftly reduced illness] to agriculture implements such as the iron plow and one can see that technology was aided by the science of metallurgy. Pure scientific research has yielded serendipitous events too: Silly Putty and Teflon. Maybe technology is also an offspring of scientific knowledge and pursued in its own right. One has to admit that some scientific fields are devoid of technology other than using technological tools such as archaeology [Egyptology], astronomy, or exotic physics.
