It was understood as the abode of the dead but not necessarily a place of suffering. All souls of the dead went to the underworld, but that realm contained many regions, including the Elysian Fields, a type of paradise, for those who had lived good lives; the plains of Asphodel, a neutral, shadowy realm; and Tartarus, the place of punishment.
