Remarkable--International Year of Astronomy 2009 statistics

At least 815 million people in 148 countries participated in the International Year of Astronomy 2009, the world’s largest science event in decades.

The 1300-page final report for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (or IYA2009 for short) was released today at the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science, according to a media release issued by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) on 7 September.

Star parties, public talks, exhibits, school programmes, books, citizen-scientist programmes, science-arts events, IYA2009 documentaries and parades honouring astronomy made IYA2009 the largest science event so far this century.

"We have to go back more than 40 years, to the Apollo Moon programme, to find another science event that has engaged the public as much as the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009)," says the report.

"At its peak in 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s first steps on the Moon reached an audience of more than a billion. Forty years later, IYA2009 has brought space back to a mass audience once again."

The report details the achievements of the IYA2009 stakeholders -148 countries, 40 international organisations and 28 global projects, making 216 in total and shows the excitement, engagement and community involvement engendered by IYA2009.
Catherine Cesarsky, chair of the IYA2009 Working Group, and the IAU’s President for most of IYA2009, says: “As this report clearly shows, IYA2009 was an immense success. We can see that the variety and quality of projects around the world touched the lives of literally millions of people. It’s the first time that such a huge network has been put together to promote a single science communication project, so IYA2009 was also a learning process for everyone involved. This report, and the lessons we have drawn from IYA2009, will be a big help to anyone organising in a similar project in future.”

Robert Williams, the current IAU President, agrees: “Looking back at the activities and events and the popular reaction, we are able to truly gauge how often and how deeply IYA2009's motto, The Universe, Yours to Discover, was fulfilled during the Year.”

Funds equivalent to at least 18 million euros were devoted to IYA2009 activities — and this financial investment was complemented by enormous in-kind contributions from the amateur and professional astronomers, educators and organisers who helped to run the events.

Some examples of the activities during IYA2009:

* The IYA2009 Cornerstone project, From Earth to the Universe, a worldwide exhibition, brought the striking beauty and intriguing science of astronomy images to the public. It was staged in unexpected and accessible locations such as parks, metro stations, shopping malls, hospitals, libraries and even prisons: it was seen in about 1000 locations in about 70 countries and 40 languages throughout the world in 2009 and has been viewed by at least 10 million people. The exhibition continues in venues around the world.

* Two worldwide star parties were held in 2009: 100 Hours of Astronomy in April, and Galilean Nights in October. In total more than three million people were involved, with many members of the public seeing night-sky objects such as the planets and the Moon through a telescope for the very first time — a life-changing experience for many.

* The highest participation figures came from India, where over 700 million people were reached by IYA2009 events. Indian astronomers showcased their work at the Republic Day parade in Delhi. With 30 000 people watching in person and an estimated 700 million watching on television, this was by far the biggest single event in the IYA2009 programme.

* In Brazil, 2.2 million people were reache via than 16 600 events around the country, from national Olympiads of astronomy and astronautics to exhibitions and regional meetings on astronomy teaching. There was a big focus on education, with educational astronomy kits being produced, and 55 000 astronomy books and 20 000 Galileoscopes being distributed to state schools.

* In South Korea more than 500 activities reached some 11 million people. A partial solar eclipse on 22 July was the highlight of the year, with viewing events widely held across the nation in 45 locations with over 400 000 people reached, from kindergarten children to the President of the Republic of Korea.

* In the United Kingdom, the organisers used a budget of more than 1 million euros to reach over one million people: 300 000 at local star-parties, 300 000 at IYA2009 planetarium shows and the 400 000 people who attended "From Earth to the Universe".

* Several IYA2009-affiliated movies were released during IYA2009, and received critical acclaim. More than 450 000 DVDs of Eyes on the Skies, a film documenting the history of the telescope, were distributed worldwide in 33 languages. The film received a MEDEA 2009 Jury Award. Another IYA2009 film, 400 Years of the Telescope, has been seen by over ten million individuals.

International Year of Astronomy 2009


A very early reminder that next year [2009] will be the official year of "Astronomy" much as 2005 was "The World Year of Physics".





In honor of the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first recorded telescopic observations of the moon, Jupiter, and other extraterrestrial objects, the International Astronomical Union [IAU] has declared an International Year of Astronomy for 2009 [IYA2009]. IYA2009 will provide an opportunity for a global celebration of astronomy, one of the oldest sciences, yet still an area of enduring curiosity and a fertile ground for new discoveries.

The vision of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 is to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the day- and night time sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery. All humans should realize the impact of astronomy and basic sciences on our daily lives, and understand better how scientific knowledge can contribute to a more equitable and peaceful society.

African astronomy


I suppose that astronomy in poor countries can have a positive impact in many ways.

"Is astronomy relevant to developing countries?"

This year is the International Year of Astronomy, marking 400 years since Galileo Galilei first announced, after looking to the skies through a telescope, that the earth goes round the sun.

Astronomy can unlock many of the universe's mysteries, but is that enough? People think of astronomy as an elite science with little relevance for development. While there are people living in poverty, isn't astronomy a luxury? How can countries justify large investments in telescopes, observatories and astronomical research while people are suffering from lack of basic amenities?

If it had to be justified on economic grounds alone, astronomy in developing countries (and indeed elsewhere) could disappear altogether.

Fortunately, the Southern African experience shows that investing in astronomy can be a good thing, both financially and for society.

Telescope stimulates economy

As the new millennium started, so did the construction work on the Southern African Large Telescope, or, as we know it, SALT. The Telescope has stimulated the country's economy, with local industry making around 60 percent of the telescope's components.

It has also boosted tourism and created new jobs. In the first year after opening, the annual number of visitors to the small town of Sutherland jumped from a few hundred to over 13,000.

A growing number of African companies are also capitalising on the interest in astronomy, using 'amateur' telescopes to attract foreign visitors and corporate companies.

Take Namibia, for example. As a result of their new telescopes in Gamsberg Pass, farmers in the area have set up small telescopes in their back gardens for visiting amateur astronomers to use.

The Namibian example also illustrates the trickle down from astronomy - switching devices developed for the telescope are now being used in industry.

But focussing on specific examples like this overlooks one of the most important ways astronomy can help development. Many cultures have long histories of indigenous astronomy that offer an easy route for introducing a modern understanding of the universe. The science of the stars really inspires the general public's interest in science.

Success story

Our telescope in South Africa is one such success story: Young South Africans aspire to be part of SALT - an icon of South African achievement. SALT is part of school curricula, helping teach concepts in mathematics, science and technology. Astronomy, which has always stimulated curiosity, can be a rallying point for a strong learning culture.

The big budgets astronomy projects bring can provide funds for education. We hold regular workshops for educators and learners ranging from building telescopes and spectroscopes to explaining astronomical concepts such as seasons or eclipses.

The International Year of Astronomy is an opportunity to expand this support by providing teachers and students in underprivileged environments with activity books, posters, games, cartoons and competitions. It could become a launching pad for an African network using astronomy to enhance education. And a better science education helps develop a more skilled workforce.

Impractical science?

Astronomy is a way into advanced science that, until recently, has been the preserve of the industrialised world.

To have a knowledge-based economy and a scientifically literate population, developing countries must invest, to some degree, in fundamental science and blue skies research. The sort of science that is easy to dismiss as impractical hence, unnecessary, hence unaffordable. South Africa has known for a while that this isn't the case. I quote here from a government white paper, published back in 1996:

"World-wide there is a clear trend for curiosity-driven research to increase as a function of national per capita income... It is important that fundamental research activity not be regarded as impractical, because it is the preserver of standards without which, in the long term, the applied sciences will also die."

The best way to ensure that countries invest in and sustain astronomy is to realise its developmental benefits. South Africa is showing that this is possible. By strengthening their astronomy communities, developing countries can make real progress towards their development goals. In other words, though it may sound counter-intuitive, studying galaxies millions of miles away can make a real difference to lives here on earth.

The traditional New Year fireworks show at Rio's famous Copacabana Beach will promote the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, said Rio's Tourism Company (Riotur) Monday.

The date was set to pay homage to Italian astronomer Galileo Gallilei.

According to Riotur's Operations Director Bruno Matos, the show will stage fireworks in several astronomy-related shapes, such as stars, comets and planets.

The show, which is set to last 20 minutes, is expected to spend over 24 tons of explosives and 19,600 bombs

"It will be the most beautiful fireworks display ever seen at Copacabana Beach," said Matos.

Some 2 million people are expected to watch the show at the Copacabana Beach. They will also enjoy concerts and samba school performances.

According to Matos, three emergency spots and 24 mobile Intensive Care Units (ICU) will be placed at the beach to offer help in case anyone gets injured.

Some 4,000 police officers will be deployed there, local media reported.

Five other fireworks shows will be also staged in the city, and a total of 15,000 police officers will be deployed during the New Year festivities.

LAMOST ushers in "Year of Astronomy"



I have not heard of China's new telescope--the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope [LAMOST].

The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) is a meridian reflecting Schmidt telescope. Using active optics technique to control its reflecting corrector makes it a unique astronomical instrument in combining large aperture with wide field of view. The available large focal plane may accommodate up to thousands of fibers, by which the collected light of distant and faint celestial objects down to 20.5 magnitude is fed into the spectrographs, promising a very high spectrum acquiring rate of ten-thousands of spectra per night. The telescope will be located at the Xinglong Station of National Astronomical Observatories. The project’s budget is RMB 235 millions yuan. It will bring Chinese astronomy into the 21century with a leading role in wide field spectroscopy and in the fields of large scale and large sample astronomy and astrophysics.--Wikipedia

BEIJING (Xinhua) -- China kicked off the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) at the Beijing Planetarium here on Saturday.

IYA2009 was initiated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Astronomy Union (IAU) as a way to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the moment when Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) began observing the universe through a telescope.

"The universe is yours to discover during the International Year of Astronomy. It's not only a year for astronomers but also more importantly, it's for the whole public," said Zhu Jin, president of the planetarium. "We hope more and more people will join us."

Every country will hold it's own festivities in January and February in recognition of the discovery.

China's slogan is: Mystery Universe, Chinese Vision.

There will be a series of activities, such as speeches, observations, teacher trainings, article competitions and a National Olympiad in Astronomy for middle school students and pupils, Zhu said.

"China has the longest history of astronomic observation," said Ji Peiwen, an official with the National Science Foundation of China.

"The country made a lot of contribution to the astronomy world in recent years, by sending its detector to the moon and a taikonaut walked in the outer space."

China also started using a large-scale astronomical telescope named LAMOST. It cost 235 million yuan (about 35 million U.S. dollars). The country planned to establish a 500-meter-diameter telescope named FAST, Ji said.

"That means China will add more contributions to the world's astronomy field," he said.

Global events for IYA2009 include 100 Hours of Astronomy, an observational relay, and an exhibition entitled: From Earth to the Universe (FETTU) Cornerstone Project.

China will also take part in World at Night, an event where people around the world turn of their lights to see stars.

"Ever since Galileo held up his telescope toward the sky, when human being's view towards the universe changed, mankind had never stopped pursuing the mystery of the universe," said Wang Enge, deputy general secretary of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The grand ceremony for IYA2009 will be held by UNESCO in Paris, France on Jan. 15 and 16.

Astronomers have launched a commercial venture aimed at putting low-cost telescopes in the hands of a million people around the world. The Galileoscope Web site, one of the cornerstone projects for the International Year of Astronomy, began taking orders for the simple yet powerful scopes tonight.

The Galileoscope has been designed as a tribute to Galileo Galilei, who lofted his telescope toward the heavens 400 years ago and started a revolution in the way we see the universe. This telescope would have knocked Galileo's stockings off: It is made to more exacting 21st-century standards, is easier to put together and shows the night sky's wonders more clearly than they were ever seen back in 1609.

One of the best things is the price: $15 for one, and a bulk rate of $12.50 per kit for 100 or more (not including shipping). That price point is aimed at making the kits affordable for students and educators as well as folks in less developed regions of the world.

Groups in Norway, Brazil and the state of Wyoming are gearing up for bulk purchases of tens of thousands of the telescopes, said the National Optical Astronomy Observatory's Stephen Pompea, who is U.S. project director for the International Year of Astronomy.

The telescope already has gotten great reviews from tryouts at recent scientific meetings. "Everybody who's looked through it has been very excited about it," Pompea told me.

The team behind the project feels the same way: "We're very excited to finally be live after more than two years of blood, sweat and tears developing the Galileoscope," the chairman of the Galileoscope Task Group, Richard Tresch Fienberg, told me in an e-mail.

The telescope, which is sold as an easy-to-assemble kit, comes with a Barlow lens that boosts its power to 50x - easily good enough to show you details on Earth's moon, the phases of Venus (which is currently sparkling in evening skies), the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn. When Galileo saw such features 400 years ago, the experience led him to the outrageous conclusion that our planet circled the sun instead of vice versa.

"If you use the Barlow as an eyepiece, you can duplicate what Galileo saw," Pompea said. But you'll want to go for the full 50x view, achieved by combining the 25x eyepiece with the power-doubling Barlow lens. The image you see in that configuration is upside-down - which means the Galileoscope "would not be a good birdwatching telescope, but maybe a bat-watching telescope," Pompea joked.

The telescope incorporates tricks that Galileo never thought of - including internal baffles, a glare shield and a special coating on the tube's interior to minimize the effect of light pollution. "We were very careful to keep in mind that most of the people who will be using the telescope are living in urban areas," Pompea said.

In addition to online ordering, the Web site offers a study guide and an observing guide to help you make the most of your viewing. One add-on will be indispensable, Pompea said: "We definitely encourage everybody to use a tripod. ... It'll be frustrating if you try to use the telescope as a spyglass and just hold it up."

Although you can't order a tripod from the Web site, virtually any tripod with a standard mounting bolt will work just fine. If you don't have a tripod and can't afford to buy one, the observing guide provides instructions for building a makeshift mount using a broom handle or a box.

The Galileoscope commercial venture was established through the efforts of the American Astronomical Society as part of its contribution to the International Year of Astronomy, but Pompea said the idea behind the project is too good to last just one year.

"We're planning on it continuing after 2009," he said.

The first Galileoscopes are due to be delivered in April. The telescope optics were designed by Richard Pfisterer and Scott Ellis of Photon Engineering. The manufacturing partner is Merit Models of Racine, Wis., and the distribution partner is Leman USA of Sturtevant, Wis.

It is really satisfying to know that some 400 year old drawing has survived relating to the early history of astronomy. These items are truly priceless.

Galileo Galilei is often credited with being the first person to look through a telescope and make drawings of the celestial objects he observed. While the Italian indeed was a pioneer in this realm, he was not the first.

Englishman Thomas Harriot made the first drawing of the moon after looking through a telescope several months before Galileo, in July 1609.

Historian Allan Chapman of the University of Oxford details that 400-year-old breakthrough in astronomy in the February 2009 edition of Astronomy and Geophysics, a journal of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Chapman explains how Harriot preceded Galileo and went on to make other maps of the moon's surface that would not be bettered for decades.

The story

Harriot lived from 1560 to 1621. He studied at St Mary's Hall (now part of Oriel College), Oxford, achieving his BA in 1580.

He then became a mathematical teacher and companion to the explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. In the early 1590s Raleigh fell from royal favor and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Harriot was passed to the patronage of Henry Percy, the Ninth Earl of Northumberland who was himself imprisoned as one of the Gunpowder Plotters in 1605 but continued to support Harriot in his residence at Sion (now Syon) Park, in what is now west London.

Harriot became a leading force in mathematics, Chapman explains, working on algebraic theory and corresponding with scientists across Europe.

By 1609, Harriot had acquired his first "Dutch trunke" (telescope), which had been invented in The Netherlands in 1608. He turned it on the moon on July 26, becoming the first astronomer to draw an astronomical object after viewing it through a telescope. The crude lunar sketch shows a rough outline of the lunar terminator (the line marking the division between night and day on the moon, as seen from the Earth) and includes a handful of features like the dark areas Mare Crisium, Mare Tranquilitatis and Mare Foecunditatis.

Harriot went on to produce more maps from 1610 to 1613, Chapman said in a statement released today. Not all of these are dated, but they show an increasing level of detail. By 1613 he had created two maps of the whole moon, with many identifiable features such as lunar craters that crucially are depicted in their correct relative positions.

The earliest telescopes of the kind used by Harriot (and Galileo) had a narrow field of view, meaning that only a small portion of the moon could be seen at any one time and making this work all the more impressive. No better maps would be published for several decades.

Despite his innovative work, Harriot remains relatively unknown. Unlike Galileo, he did not publish his drawings. Unlike Galileo, Harriot is not being widely celebrated during 2009, dubbed the International Year of Astronomy as a commemoration of the telescope's 400th year.

Chapman attributes this to his comfortable position as a "well-maintained philosopher to a great and wealthy nobleman" with a generous salary, said to be "several times the level of the Warden of Wadham College, Oxford." Harriot had comfortable housing and a specially provided observing chamber on top of Sion House, all of which contrasted with Galileo's financial pressures.

Galileo, interestingly, was unable to buy a telescope. So he figured out the optics of it and built his own. He also examined the moon, and then found that the Milky Way was composed of individual stars. Galileo also discovered four moons around Jupiter and spent much time observing and drawing sunspots.

"Thomas Harriot is an unsung hero of science," Chapman said. "His drawings mark the beginning of the era of modern astronomy we now live in, where telescopes large and small give us extraordinary information about the universe we inhabit."

Professor Andy Fabian, President of the Royal Astronomical Society, agrees.

"As an astrophysicist of the 21st century, I can only look back and marvel at the work of 17th century astronomers like Thomas Harriot," Fabian said. "The world is right to celebrate Galileo in the International Year of Astronomy – but Harriot shouldn't be forgotten!"

"Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery"--tour


The American Library Association (ALA), in cooperation with the Space Telescope Science Institute, Office of Public Outreach, Baltimore, Maryland, and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts, invited public libraries to apply for a national tour to 40 sites of "Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery," a traveling exhibition to mark the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) in 2009. The exhibit will travel from January 2009 through December 2010.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has provided major funding for the exhibit. Exhibit sponsors were especially interested in receiving applications from public libraries in small towns and rural areas that have limited access to NASA resources, as well as from public libraries in larger population centers. All libraries on the tour receive $500 programming support stipends and $250 collection development stipends.

The STScI Office of Public Outreach (OPO) is a world leader in astronomy presentation through news media, websites, planetarium shows, museum exhibits, curriculum support materials, professional development and other educational resources. Among the award-winning web sites created by OPO.

National Astronomy Exhibit Comes to Topeka

“Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery,” an exciting new traveling exhibit that uses dramatic imagery from Galileo’s observations to the Hubble Space Telescope and other space missions to show how our understanding of the universe has changed over the last four hundred years, opens at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library’s Sabatini Art Gallery on April 22, 2009. The exhibit is part of the International Year of Astronomy, a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, highlighted by the 400th anniversary in 2009 of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo.

"Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery" is presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland; the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and the American Library Association, Chicago, Illinois, through funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
