Today is "the birthday of Rod Serling, born in Syracuse, New York (1925), best known as the creator, writer and producer of the television series The Twilight Zone, which first aired in 1959. Serling believed it was the writer's job to "menace the public consciousness" and considered television and radio as a means for social criticism.

In the mid-1950s, Serling won three Emmy awards for three television plays he wrote. He grew increasingly frustrated over not being allowed to write controversial scripts about humanity because corporate sponsors would not subsidize messages that might be offensive to the public, so he switched to science fiction. He found it was easier to slip social criticism by the censors if it took place in a fictional world. Creating The Twilight Zone allowed him total artistic freedom, and the show was enormously popular during the five years it aired on television."

University of Missouri’s Tiger Pantry is part of a trend to keep struggling students afloat.

 University of Missouri junior Simone McGautha works three campus jobs and has accumulated $11,000 in student loans as she seeks to become the first in her family with a college degree. So when McGautha learned about a new campus food pantry for needy students, the 19-year-old was happy to have the help.

“I use every bit of money I have for basic needs,” the Kansas City native said. “I don’t have family putting money in my bank account. If somebody wants to help, why not?

The student-run Tiger Pantry is among a growing number of programs at university campuses. Organizers say it’s both a response to the weak economy and a sign of the latest trend in student activism.

The pantry, which opened in early October, is within easy walking distance of the University of Missouri campus in Columbia. It has given free food to nearly 150 people and their families, and an additional 100 people have expressed an interest.

Recipients include nearly three dozen graduate students and a similar number of university employees, as well as a handful of professors.

At the Tiger Pantry, users are limited to monthly visits, and the amount of their bounty depends on family size. But they don’t have to prove that they’re struggling financially.

Student organizers modeled the program on an effort at the University of Arkansas known as the Full Circle Food Pantry. As a sanctioned organization, the Tiger Pantry receives some money from student fees but primarily relies on donated food.

Students can drop off donations in large bins around campus, and the local food pantry provided 2,500 pounds of food to help the Tiger Pantry get started.

The University of Mississippi and Auburn University are also starting campus food pantries, joining schools such as Central Florida, Georgia, Iowa State, Oregon State and West Virginia. The University of California, Los Angeles deploys “economic crisis response” teams that assist students struggling to pay bills and rent or who live on the streets.

Campus organizers estimate at least 20 schools have similar programs, with more interested in joining the effort.

The Auburn food pantry is part of a broader anti-hunger campaign that includes an international hunger research institute that is a collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme.

A student-driven “War on Hunger” campaign launched in 2004 has spread to more than 200 universities worldwide, the school says.

“It’s a moral imperative of a land-grant institution to improve the quality of life,” said Harriett Giles, the hunger institute’s managing director. “That’s our mission.”

Precise statistics measuring the extent of student and staff hunger are elusive, Giles and other supporters of such efforts acknowledge. Campus administrators also caution that the food bank projects could go dormant if the next generation of student leaders fails to share a passion for them.

“The university wants us to prove the need of the pantry first,” said Missouri’s food bank director, Paul Haluszczak, a St. Peters junior.

Peggy Kirkpatrick, executive director of the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri, said more people are using food pantries. She said her regional group serves nearly 13,000 people each month, compared with fewer than 8,000 just four years ago — a 63 percent increase.

Kirkpatrick was among the early skeptics of the student effort, though now she’s an ally. Her regional group provides help to the Tiger Pantry.

“I didn’t want it to be a novelty — then, when these students graduate, who carries it on?” she said. “I was putting up roadblocks, making sure it was legit.”

Kaitlyn Kelly, a senior animal science major from Blue Springs, has used the Tiger Pantry from the start. So does her boyfriend.

Kelly has cashed childhood savings bonds and other investments to help pay for college. She also has wheat allergies, making her food choices more difficult and costly.

“I can’t just go out and buy a box of ramen noodles,” she said. “Eating for me is pretty hard, and expensive.”

Kelly said she isn’t ashamed or embarrassed about seeking help, but she realizes some of her peers might consider relying on the pantry a stigma. That’s why the Tiger Pantry, like its counterparts on other campuses, is off the beaten track and provides its groceries in generic, unlabeled shopping bags.

“I need help. So I’m not going to refuse it,” she said. “There are plenty of students who could use this. This whole program is a godsend.”

Before an ominous two-handed engine called “budget constraints” smote it into oblivion, a movie adaption of Milton’s Paradise Lost was slated to arrive in 2013. Directed by Alex Proyas and starring Bradley Cooper as Satan, the film was billed as a science fiction actioner featuring 3-D “aerial warfare” between heavenly hosts and (probably) a lot of dark muttering about forbidden knowledge. Now Legendary Pictures has scrapped the epic, leaving us to contemplate our theology this Christmas without the promise of Cooper lolling around in a lake of fire, looking roguish.

But that doesn’t mean we should forget Paradise Lost as the holidays roll in. At Brow Beat, we’re big science fiction fans and we thought the Yuletide would be a great time to pay homage to a Christian thinker who also happened to beget one of our favorite genres. That’s because John Milton—poet, free speech advocate, civil servant, classics scholar—was arguably a forefather to Asimov, Bradbury, Delaney, and the rest. Their outlandish other worlds owe a debt to his visionary mode of storytelling; their romance—characters who go on quests, encounter adversaries at portals, channel the forces of light and dark—is his, too.

Not to mention that the text of Paradise Lost is saturated in science. Milton met Galileo, for the first and only time, in a 1638 visit that Jonathan Rosen compared to “those comic book specials in which Superman meets Batman.” The “Tuscan artist” appears in Paradise Lost more than once. Book I compares Satan’s shield to the moon seen through a telescope. And the poem is studded with scientific details—“luminous inferior orbs” churning through outer space, descriptions of sunspots and seasons, creatures that evolve (according to divine plan, but still). Through it all, Milton, a storyteller, comes off as entranced by the laws governing the universe. (His mouthpiece in this regard is Adam, who cannot get enough of the angel Raphael’s disquisition on celestial motions in Book VIII.) There’s something very sci-fi about anyone who, while taking care to present his era’s astronomical theories as speculative, still likes to spin that speculation out into long descriptions of cosmic phenomena. Arthur C. Clarke would surely be proud.

Also, Milton kinda sorta thought that extraterrestrial life might be possible. In Book III of Paradise Lost, Satan flies down from Heaven to Earth, passing distant stars that, on closer inspection, turn out to be “other Worlds.” Other worlds with aliens on them? Could be! “Who dwelt happy there,” Milton explains, the archangel “stayd not to enquire.”

Then there’s Milton’s obsession with secret, all-powerful technologies. In Book VI of his epic, the rebel angels send the good army into disarray with a Satanic invention: gunpowder. Aided by the devil’s evil genius, they harvest the crude materials from beneath the ground and pack them into cannons. Satan, unveiling his dastardly plan for the first time, gets one of the great “Look what I invented” super-villain speeches in the English language:

    These [nitrous ores] in thir dark Nativitie the Deep
    Shall yield us pregnant with infernal flame,
    Which into hallow Engins long and round
    Thick-rammd, at th' other bore with touch of fire
    Dilated and infuriate shall send forth
    From far with thundring noise among our foes
    Such implements of mischief as shall dash
    To pieces, and orewhelm whatever stands
    Adverse.

Yikes. Like the sci-fi B-movies of the 1950s, which imagined the doomsday consequences of nuclear energy, Paradise Lost reflects anxieties about contemporary technology. In the late 17th century, armies were beginning to experiment with “modern” artillery, such as cannons and gunpowder; people faced a previously unthinkable type of violence, one vicious enough to leave entire battalions dead when the smoke cleared. Science’s possibilities, but also its costs, weighed on Milton throughout his life, as they have any science-fictionist worth his salt.

And if you need more proof that John Milton inspired generations of sci-fi progeny, note that the creature in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein liked to read books. He read them to understand his place in the world; to discern his relationship to his maker; to figure out which quests for knowledge are actually worth pursuing. Of the volumes he used to educate himself, Shelley tells us, one in particular “excited different and far deeper emotions” than the rest. That book was Paradise Lost.

Christmas and a war---nearly 100 years ago

The following is a true tale. This is not a thing heard of and lightly repeated and half believed, but witnessed in these late years by living eyes, and, in the second case, by my own. . . .

December 18–19, 1914, was a night of tragedy in the British army. Forgotten now — buried in the sancta of regimental records, it was only a demonstration — of what, of whom, of how much or of how little — that need be no inquiry here. And it was only on the front of two divisions that the troops advanced at nightfall, artillery firing a quarter-of-an-hour’s bombardment, all the earth shaking, and a sprinkle of musketry shattering the dark. For the most part, the Germans sat quietly waiting while the shells whined overhead to their support lines; only when figures loomed up in their wire did they open fire. The attack wavered, but the survivors came with a rush to the lip of the trench where for several moments a silent, tremendous struggle took place between bayonet, rifle butt, revolver, and physical strength. Some lay where they fell under the enemy parapet, some dragged themselves back and died in the open, some were made prisoners. Here and there a party of ten or a dozen British fought their way into the German trench and hung on till daylight; then, upon order given, withdrew. It was left to daylight to reveal — as daylight faithfully reveals — the truth of tragedy, and the price to pay.

Hot chocolate, warm clothes, and wrapped presents under a tree, ‘tis once again the season to be jolly! We are familiar enough with the holidays as they are now; but what might Christmas be like in 50 years?

Of course it's impossible to predict with 100% accuracy how life will change in the next half century, but if we track today's exponentially-advancing technologies; and then add some creative possibilities, we can project a plausible scenario of what it might be like living in our high-tech wonderworld of 2062.

Humanity has much to be thankful for as we trek through the 21st Century. By 2040, scientists have unraveled many of the mysteries surrounding consciousness, which some believe will one day lead to mind-enhancement systems that lower crime rates and reduce violence, making the world a safer place.

Changes are everywhere in 2062. Driverless cars whisk us about; and stem cells, DNA editing and nanobots keep us forever healthy and youthful. Robot servants have become the most popular home acquisition; but Christmas is still our favorite time of year for socializing and exchanging gifts with friends.

Nanotechnology may help the world become a better place in 2062. Powered by personal nanofactories that help create a scarcity-free lifestyle, these nanowonders are slashing the rich-poor gap in developed nations, fighting poverty in third-world countries, and offering the beginnings of a peaceful 'global village'.

Gifts topping Santa's list include interactive 'smart' toys that come alive on voice command and virtual reality systems that provide experiences beyond our wildest dreams. For that special person who has everything, a two-week vacation at the Mars Space Colony can be purchased for $250,000.

Launched in 2050, the space elevator slashed costs of getting people into orbit. The SE has become the prime driver in the booming space tourism industry. Orbit access is now only an elevator ride away.

Trips to space hotels and space amusement parks cost $2,000-$5,000; Moon excursions, $10,000. In addition, faster-than-light hyper-drive ships can now reach the Moon in one hour, Mars in just five hours.

Virtual reality provides irresistible experiences. Neuro-bots enter our mind and replace normal input with software that creates breathtaking simulations of the program requested – indiscernible from reality.

Entering a Holodeck-like recreation facility, people voice selections for a desired theme, such as a romantic fantasy, winning a 19th-Century American West gunfight, or any other bold scenario that one's mind can conjure up. Simulated adventures have become the rage for entertainment buffs worldwide.

Homes have changed too. Windows and doors can alter their shape, color and location, allowing fresh air and light where needed. Satellites provide house ID via Wi-Fi/thought technology; street addresses no longer necessary. Mind scans restrict access to family and guests, ending the need for locks and keys.

Turkey remains the favorite holiday dish in 2062, but messy food preparation has disappeared. Nano-replicators provide perfect meals that include the exact nutrient requirements for each family member.

With voice command, mom selects the food, which is then served by the household robot. Mom, Dad, Daughter, and Son sit down to eat. Although they live on different continents, all four Grandmas and Grandpas appear as lifelike holograms, and join the festivities for the traditional yuletide toast.

After dinner, the moment has finally arrived – "let's open presents," Dad says. With a shriek of joy, Daughter opens her gift, a Barbie Doll resembling a mini-human with soft skin and a likable personality. Programmed to require love and attention, the intelligent robo-doll quickly snuggles up to its new owner.

Next, the Son opens his gift, Animal Reality, a 'smart' toy made of nano-components that can change into any animal imagined by its owner. Built-in safeguards prevent creating harmful or illegal objects.

Will the future unfold in this upbeat way? Clearly, the road to 2062 winds around unknown turns, but strong demands for technology improvements drives this vision forward. Happy holidays, everyone; I wish all of my readers the happiest of futures – in today's world and tomorrow's!
